Glaze over at Succot

GOLDERS GREEN Ruth Rothenburg

A Hendon family is believed to be the first in the UK to have a glass succah. Soli and Leah Kelaty wanted a new succah to replace their old one, which was leaky and cold. We had one which had deteriorated over the years. The roof sometimes blew away, and we lost all the lovely pictures the children had done over the years. Using it, said Mrs Kelaty, had become a test of faith..

She persuaded her husband that a new conservatory could double as a succah........ we created a conservatory where one half of the roof slides under the other..

Mrs Kelaty had it checked by her minister, Rabbi Moshe Cohen of the Hendon Sephardi Hechal Leah Synagogue, who declared it kosher and thought it very original said Ms Stracey.

The succah its glass roof replaced by laurel branches, has now hosted several Succot meals, including lunch for more than 20 people.
